Shepherd Express

A monthly magazine owned by Alternative Publications, Inc., and their advertising agency, Water Street Creative, in Milwaukee, Wis.

I was the webmaster for the Shepherd Express (shepherdexpress.com), a monthly magazine which had been a weekly newspaper for over 30 years before the pandemic. I oversaw all aspects of the website, which was on a CMS called Metro Publisher. This was not an open source CMS, so my coding for it was limited to HTML, CSS and JavaScript. However I got around this by creating a backend on a separate site hosted on HostGator, where I could code in PHP and then embed the resulting functionality in Metro Publisher. I created a web app called ShepFinder (shepfinder.com) which is for searching and looking up places to pick up the magazine. It was created with PHP and JavaScript (jQuery) with a MySQL database. I was also the web developer for the Shepherd's advertising agency, Water Street Creative (now closed), and worked on the backends of their WordPress websites including [...]. In addition, I was part of the editorial staff, and helped come out with editorial content for the magazine. I also wrote articles for both the website and magazine, and did photography.

This was a 7-month contract job working on several related Magento projects. It is a company specializing in school supplies, books, etc. and sells both wholesale and retail online. I also worked on several non-Magento projects that entailed finding fixes with emails, image uploads, and more. The main project was upgrading Magento from Community to Enterprise version (now called Open Source and Commerce, respectively).

This was a Magento web development team (PHP) that specialized in full service e-commerce websites. Most of the time we worked on a ticket-based system where clients would put in a request to change, fix or add something to their site. Other projects included creating a new site from scratch, or tasks such as switching web hosting or up- or downgrading the Magento to or from Community and Enterprise editions.
